Instrumental Music
Grade 5
This year, students in grade 5 will learn to play the recorder. Students can either purchase a recorder for $8.00 or borrow one for use throughout the year. When ordered through the school, students will receive a Yamaha recorder, including carrying case and fingering chart, that will become their personal property and that they can enjoy playing for many years to come. Students may take these recorders to and from school to get the maximum amount of practice time and are responsible for ensuring that their recorder is present for each music class. If students wish to borrow a recorder from the school, they will be assigned a particular recorder that will be shared with a student from a different class. These recorders will also have a carrying case, but will need to be signed out and disinfected for each class. Borrowed recorders must remain on school property at all times and students are encouraged to come in before school or during lunch for extra practice time. Grade 6 and 7
This year, students in grade 6 and 7 will be introduced to the new experience of playing in an actual wind ensemble! Students will be placed on a wind instrument, such as a clarinet, trumpet, or trombone, and will study the techniques involved in playing and performing instrumental music. During the first week of school, students will hear samples of the variety of instruments available at Warden Avenue PS and will be asked to list their top 4 preferences for their instrument assignment. Once assignments are given out, students will learn how to assemble, hold, and play their instruments. Students may sign out their assigned instrument for practice at home and are encouraged to rehearse the notes and pieces studied in class.

Grade 8
This year, students in grade 8 will continue to develop techniques for playing and performing the wind instrument they were assigned in grade 7. Once instrument assignments have been given to all the grades participating in the instrumental music program, students will be able to sign out their instruments for practice at home. Grade 8 students will focus on more challenging music pieces this year that feature multiple parts for each section of instruments.
